Change of Season Medicinal “Soup”

As mentioned in my newsletter – not for the light of heart this is not a tasty Grandma blessed chicken noodle soup….

It is actually a tea/tonic/medicine boiled and can be in a cup or add some of the veggies and extra spices…if you also use a chicken broth – I recommend boiling the whole chicken separately and reserve the meat to the side so this can be enjoyed if the palate does not accept the herbs wholeheartedly!

Here are the ancient old formula herbs used: Basically they uplift systems and mildly detoxify.

  • Codonopsis root: This herb  strengthens “qi” energy, associated to the immune system and your general constitution ie your personal energy.
  • Astragalus root: Astragalus is a root commonly used  as anti viral, antibacterial, adrenal tonifier and supports the lung tissue via these mechanisms. It has been shown in the research to activate specific immune cells to target viruses.
  • Dioscorea (Chinese yam) root:  Used to support kidneys and lung function.
  • Chinese Lycii berries (goji berries):  Rich in antioxidants, and known to supportthe liver, kidneys and immune system. An anti-aging or Pro- aging ingredient in many formulas and recipes.

And now this is my version of the medicinal “soup”:

  • 2 cups fresh shiitake mushrooms
  • 8 -10 large cloves of garlic grated
  • 3 onions chopped
  • 5 green onions chopped
  • 6 stalks of celery chopped
  • 4 large sweet carrots chopped
  • 1 cup fresh parsley chopped
  • Maybe 2 tbsp turmeric powder – this is staining and has its own unique taste reserve and experiment
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp Real Salt Redman’s or proper sea salt or Braggs Amino to your taste – experiment
  • 1/2 cup Codonopsis root
  • 1/2 cup Astragalus root
  • 1/2 cup Dioscorea (Chinese yam) root
  • 1/2 cup Chinese Lycii berries(goji berries)
  • 2L chicken broth – remember if you made your own remove meat and reserve as a side dish
  • 2L filtered water

Sauté onions in some olive oil, add carrots, mushrooms, celery, garlic, parsley – heat through.
Add the salt, herbs, broth and water and simmer for 4 hours adding water if necessary to maintain 4 liters.
Strain and drink 2 cups per day as an adult – over 16 yo – consult me for other dosages.
This is for a 10 day period and or if you have a cold/flu.
Yum! Enjoy, stay well or get better, and have fun once again!
